What a good karigar does well
A skilled karigar reads a room quickly. He can work around a beam, a sloping floor or an off-square wall and make a piece that fits the gap to the last few millimetres. He can change a detail on the spot when you see something you do not like. Labour-led work avoids showroom and catalogue costs, so the price for built-in storage is usually lower than a company product. Many karigars also have deep specialist skill: carving, cane work, polishing, traditional upholstery. For a family that knows a trusted karigar through relatives or a building society, that relationship is valuable. About half of India's furniture workforce is concentrated in five states, according to skill-council material, and much of that skill sits with individual craftsmen and small workshops.
Where a single craftsman is stretched
Upholstered seating is harder to judge than a wardrobe. Once a sofa is closed, you cannot see the frame timber, the joints, the webbing or springs, or the foam grade, and a verbal description is hard to hold anyone to later. Recliners add mechanisms and, in motorised models, motors and electrical parts that need sourcing and service support. Matching a finish across a sofa, two armchairs and a bed made at different times is difficult for one person. A single craftsman may also be the only after-sales channel. If he moves city or takes a large contract, a repair a year later can be hard to arrange. None of this is a comment on skill. It is the limit of what one person working job to job can put in writing and stand behind.
What SOISU offers instead
SOISU works on upholstered seating, recliners, beds, dining and armchairs, in artificial composite leather, fabric, bouclé and velvet. It does not use real leather or PU. Each piece starts from a base model; producible changes to size, material or design are possible, and each change revises the price. Before production you receive a signed drawing and specification. The ready-by date is written on the order. The warranty is 2 years on the terms in the order, and after-sales is handled by SOISU's own team. Recliner motors are BIS-certified and sourced in India. SOISU offers home measurement, drawings, technical drawings and 3D visualisation. If your home is not ready when the furniture is, it is held free for up to 30 days. SOISU does not publish prices; you get a quote for your specification.
Where a carpenter is still the better choice
Choose a carpenter for wardrobes and lofts built to the wall, kitchen and utility storage, TV walls and panelling, bed-back panels, pooja units and shoe racks. Choose a carpenter when the lowest cost matters more than a warranty. Choose a carpenter when the piece is unusual enough that no base model comes close, and when you are comfortable supervising on site. SOISU does not build fitted carpentry, so for these jobs it is not an alternative at all.
Using both on one project
Most homes need both. A practical split: the carpenter builds everything fixed to walls, and the seating, beds and dining come from a furniture maker. Share dimensions between them early. The TV wall depth decides how far the sofa sits from the screen. The wardrobe position decides where the bed goes. A drawing of the room with every piece marked prevents two trades working from different assumptions. If the carpentry runs late, ask your furniture maker how long they will hold finished pieces; SOISU holds them free for up to 30 days.
