Material FAQ — Italian Leather, Fabric, Bouclé

Italian leather, performance fabric, bouclé, leatherette — what to choose and why, for the Indian home.

What is full-grain Italian leather?

Full-grain leather is the top layer of the hide with its natural grain pattern intact — the highest grade of leather available. Italian full-grain leather is tanned in Tuscan tanneries using vegetable or chrome-tan processes refined over centuries, then water-dyed for colour penetration through the hide rather than just on the surface. Water-dyed full-grain leather develops a patina over years, ages 15–25 years in daily use and is the most durable upholstery surface money can buy when correctly conditioned. Every SOISU leather piece uses full-grain water-dyed Italian leather as standard.

Italian leather vs leatherette — which is right for India?

Italian full-grain leather lasts 15–25 years, develops a patina and breathes with the climate. Leatherette (PU or PVC) lasts 3–6 years in Mumbai humidity before the top coat cracks, does not breathe, and looks the same the day it cracks as the day you bought it. The price difference (typically 4–6×) is real, but so is the lifespan difference (4–6×). For a long-term sofa, Italian leather is the only durable choice for India. SOISU does not stock leatherette upholstery on its flagship leather collection — only premium German-engineered faux on selected entry pieces, clearly labelled.

Is performance fabric a good alternative to leather in India?

Yes — for families with young children or pets, or homes where the sofa sees heavy daily use, a high-twist performance fabric (microfibre, performance-poly blends, technical chenille) is often the better choice. SOISU performance fabrics are rated to 30,000+ double-rubs (industry standard is 8,000–18,000), come in family-grade colours, are stain-resistant treated and zip off for cleaning. They have a shorter total lifespan than full-grain leather (8–12 years vs 15–25) but a much more forgiving daily life.

What is bouclé fabric and is it India-friendly?

Bouclé is a looped-yarn fabric with a textured, tactile surface — the material driving modern minimalist Indian interiors. SOISU stocks bouclé in undyed cotton/wool blends and synthetic alternatives. Bouclé is gentle on pets and kids in terms of marks, but the loop texture catches dust and needs vacuuming once a week — more maintenance than performance fabric. The S880 and S819 beds and selected armchairs are SOISU's bouclé pieces.

What foam density do you use?

SOISU uses 32-density (kg/m³) high-resilience European foam wrapped in a hollow conjugate fibre layer for the soft top-feel. Cushion cores last 8–12 years in daily Indian use without sagging. Lower-density foam (16–24 density) is common in mass-market sofas and loses 30–40% of its volume in 2 years. The density spec is on every SOISU PDP.
