How to Measure a Sofa for Your Room in India

By Rohan Shah, SOISU Furniture · 28 May 2026

Direct Answer

Measuring a sofa for an Indian apartment requires four separate checks: room footprint, traffic clearance, delivery pathway, and visual proportion. For the room, leave at least 90 cm between the sofa and the opposite wall for comfortable leg space. For traffic flow, maintain a 75 cm walkway on all used sides. Before buying, measure your building's lift door (most Mumbai and Delhi lifts are 80–90 cm wide) and stairwell width, as many large sofas must be partially disassembled for delivery. Finally, a sofa should occupy no more than two-thirds of the wall it faces — a 270 cm sofa against a 280 cm wall will feel oppressive and block sightlines. Always measure with tape, not eye.

The Four Measurements You Need

First: your room's usable length and width (subtract built-in cabinets, TV units, and door swing arcs). Second: the sofa's external dimensions — width (arm to arm), depth (front to back), and height (floor to top of back). Third: the delivery path — lift internal dimensions, stairwell width at the tightest landing, and apartment entrance door width. Fourth: visual proportion — the sofa width should ideally match within 30 cm of the room's shorter axis, or the room will feel unbalanced.

Common Mistakes in 2BHK and 3BHK Flats

The most frequent error is buying a 3-seater standard (220 cm wide) for a room that only has 180 cm of clear wall after accounting for a TV unit. The second most common mistake is forgetting to measure the lift — a 220 cm sofa will not fit diagonally through an 80 cm lift door in one piece. Always ask your furniture brand whether the sofa can be delivered disassembled, and what the reassembly process involves.

Clearance Rules for Indian Living Rooms

Minimum 90 cm sofa-to-TV distance for a 55-inch screen (add 30 cm per additional 10 inches). Minimum 45 cm coffee table-to-sofa clearance for comfortable seating. Minimum 75 cm walkway past any sofa end. In compact 2BHKs, a 180 cm wide 2.5-seater often works better than a 220 cm 3-seater and creates a more breathable layout.
