What Sofa Depth Is Right for Indian Sitting Posture?

By Rohan Shah, SOISU Furniture · 28 May 2026

Direct Answer

The ideal sofa seat depth for Indian sitting posture is 55–65 cm — significantly shallower than the European standard of 85–100 cm. Indian sitting posture, shaped by cross-legged and semi-upright seating traditions, places the centre of gravity further back than Western posture. This means most Indian adults use only the back 40–50 cm of a deep European sofa, leaving the front portion empty. A shallower seat feels more supportive, promotes upright posture, and makes standing up from a low-seated position considerably easier — particularly important for elderly family members. SOISU's sofa depths are calibrated for Indian proportions at 60–70 cm seat depth, not the 90+ cm European standard.

Why European Sofa Depths Don't Work

European sofas are designed for a Western sitting posture that uses the full seat depth — legs extended, slight recline, relaxed posture. The average European sofa seat depth is 85–100 cm. For a person 165–170 cm tall (average Indian adult), sitting fully back in a 95 cm seat leaves the legs unsupported at the knee — causing the lower back to lose lumbar support. Most Indian sofa users either sit forward on the edge or pile cushions behind their back to compensate for this depth mismatch. The solution is not cushions — it is the correct seat depth from the start.

The Floor-Sitting Cultural Context

Indian interior design traditionally balances Western furniture with floor-level seating — the transition between sofa and floor is different than in European homes. This shapes how sofas are approached and used. Indian users tend to perch at the edge of a sofa before standing, rather than leveraging the full depth. A shallower sofa (55–65 cm) accommodates this naturally. Seat height also matters: 45–48 cm allows an easy standing pivot, while European 40–42 cm requires more effort — noticeable for elderly users.

How to Test Before Buying

When testing a sofa in a showroom: sit fully back, feet flat on the floor. Your knees should be at approximately 90 degrees. If your knees are significantly above hip height, the seat is too shallow. If your legs are almost fully extended or your feet barely touch the floor, the seat is too deep. The SOISU showroom in Prabhadevi allows extended test-sitting — we encourage 15–20 minutes of real-world testing, not a 30-second showroom sit.
