How to Clean a Leather Sofa in India

By Rohan Shah, SOISU Furniture · 28 May 2026

Direct Answer

Cleaning a leather sofa in India requires a different approach than in colder, drier climates because Indian conditions — particularly monsoon humidity followed by dry-season air conditioning — stress leather in both directions. For routine cleaning (weekly): use a barely damp microfibre cloth to remove dust and surface grime. Never use wet cloths that leave standing moisture on leather — this promotes mould on the leather surface and within the foam below. For deeper cleaning (monthly): use a pH-neutral leather cleaner (pH 5–7). Apply with a soft cloth, work in circular motions, wipe dry. Avoid household cleaners, acetone-based products, baby wipes (contain alcohol and surfactants that strip finish), and saddle soap (too alkaline for finished leather). After every cleaning, apply a leather conditioner — this is not optional in India. The dry months (October–March in Delhi, March–May nationally) desiccate finished leather faster than cleaning alone, and conditioning replaces the oils that prevent cracking at flex lines.

The Monsoon Problem: Mould on Leather

Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, and Kochi homes face ambient humidity above 80% for 4–6 months a year. At this humidity, untreated or poorly-finished leather develops surface mould — visible as white or grey powdery patches, sometimes with a musty smell. Prevention: keep the sofa 1–1.5 m from any wall to allow air circulation behind it. Run the AC or dehumidifier for 2–3 hours daily during peak monsoon months. If mould appears, wipe with a cloth dampened in a 50/50 white vinegar and water solution, dry immediately, and apply conditioner. Do not use bleach — it strips leather finish permanently.

The Dry-Season Problem: Cracking at Flex Lines

Full-grain and semi-aniline leather contains natural oils that keep it supple. Delhi homes running AC at 18–20°C in summer create conditions as dry as a European winter. Over 2–3 seasons, unconditioned leather loses these oils and develops visible cracking along the seat-to-backrest fold line — the highest-flex point on a sofa. This is irreversible without professional recolouring. Prevention is simple: condition every 3–4 months, more frequently if you notice the leather feeling slightly rough or less pliable than when new.
