How to Tell the Difference in a Showroom
Five tests any buyer can apply: (1) Flex test: Bend a section of the leather. Real leather wrinkles naturally and returns to shape. Bonded leather shows a more uniform bend and has a slight plastic resistance. (2) Edge inspection: Look at the cut edge of a cushion where the leather is stitched. Real leather shows a fibrous cross-section. Bonded leather shows a layered cross-section with fabric backing visible. (3) Moisture test: Touch the surface with slightly damp fingers. Real leather absorbs moisture slowly. Bonded leather repels it initially (PU coating) then absorbs it through cracks as it ages. (4) Smell: Real leather has a distinctive organic smell. Bonded leather smells faintly of plastic or adhesive. (5) Price: If a "leather" sofa is under ₹80,000 for a 3-seater, it is not real leather.
