Foam Density Guide for Sofas in India — What the Numbers Mean

By Rohan Shah, SOISU Furniture · 28 May 2026

Direct Answer

Foam density in sofas is measured in kilograms per cubic metre (kg/m³). A 1m³ block of 35 kg/m³ foam weighs 35 kg — the higher the number, the heavier and more durable the foam. For Indian homes: 35–40 kg/m³ is the minimum for a primary sofa seat cushion; 40–45 kg/m³ is recommended for heavy-use or recliner seating; 45–50 kg/m³ is correct for bed mattress toppers and recliner footrests where concentrated body weight acts on a smaller area. Foam below 32 kg/m³ (common in budget furniture and many imports) will permanently compress within 3–5 years under Indian conditions. Importantly, density alone does not measure firmness — the Indentation Load Deflection (ILD) value measures how firm the foam feels.

Density vs Firmness: The Two Numbers You Need

Density (kg/m³) measures how much material is in the foam — a durability indicator. Firmness (ILD — Indentation Load Deflection) measures how much force it takes to compress the foam 25% — a comfort indicator. These are independent: high-density foam can be soft or firm depending on its cell structure. For an Indian sofa seat cushion: target density 38–45 kg/m³ (durability) AND ILD 25–35 (medium-firm comfort). For a recliner or day bed: density 40–50 kg/m³, ILD 20–28 (slightly softer for prolonged lying). For a back cushion: density 28–35 kg/m³ (lower load, so lower density sufficient), ILD 15–22 (soft).

HR Foam vs Conventional Foam vs Bonded Foam

Three types are sold in India: HR (High Resilience) foam: Open-cell structure, high density, returns to shape after compression. The gold standard. Conventional polyurethane foam: Closed-cell, adequate for low-use applications (decorative cushions, mattress toppers), poor resilience under heavy daily use. Bonded/reconstituted foam: Shredded foam scraps compressed with adhesive binders. Inconsistent density, poor moisture management, short lifespan in India. The key question to ask: "Is this HR foam?" A legitimate manufacturer specifies the foam type and its ISO certification number — conventional and bonded foam lack these certifications because they don't meet the performance standards.

How to Request Foam Specifications

Ask the manufacturer or retailer for the foam specification sheet showing: Foam type (HR, conventional), Density (kg/m³), ILD (N), Compression set (%) — should be below 15% for HR foam. ISO test standard used (typically ISO 1855 or IS 7888 for Indian manufacturers). Any manufacturer who cannot provide this or shows confusion should be treated as a red flag. Legitimate furniture manufacturers use consistent foam suppliers with documented specifications — this is basic supply chain practice, not an unusual request.
