How Each Mechanism Works
Manual recliners use a pull-handle or push-back mechanism — a steel pawl-and-ratchet or tension system that locks in multiple positions. Quality manual mechanisms have 3–7 reclining positions and a separate footrest extension. The mechanism is the most important component in a manual recliner — German or Italian mechanisms from brands like Leggett & Platt are the benchmark. Electric recliners use a 12V or 24V motor with a linear actuator — they have fewer locking positions but smoother, continuous adjustment. They require a power outlet within cord length of the sofa.
