Corner Sofa vs L-Shaped Sofa: What's the Difference in India?

By Rohan Shah, SOISU Furniture · 28 May 2026

Direct Answer

In common Indian usage, the terms 'corner sofa' and 'L-shaped sofa' are often used interchangeably, but they describe different products. A true corner sofa has a 90-degree corner unit as a structural component — it cannot be separated. An L-shaped sofa is typically a modular configuration where a 2-seater or 3-seater is joined to a chaise or additional section, and the two parts can be reconfigured. For Indian apartments, modular L-shaped sofas offer more flexibility — the sections can be separated for narrow delivery pathways and reconfigured if you move. Corner sofas are more rigid but often more stable and seamless in appearance. Both work well for joint family living; the L-shape is better for compact spaces where the configuration may need to change.

Key Structural Difference

A corner sofa has a dedicated corner unit — typically 100 cm × 100 cm — that forms the pivot point of the design. This corner unit contains the hinge of the seating system and is integral to the frame. Remove it and neither side functions properly. An L-shaped modular sofa achieves the same visual shape by placing a separate chaise or section at a right angle to the main sofa. The connection is mechanical (bolts or brackets), not structural. The modular version is more flexible but the join point is a potential weak spot if the bracket is not robust.

Which Works Better in Indian Apartments

For Mumbai and Delhi apartments where lifts are small and corridors are narrow, modular L-shaped sofas are significantly easier to deliver. The corner unit in a true corner sofa is often the largest single piece in the assembly — 100 × 100 cm — and may not fit through a standard apartment door (typically 80–90 cm wide) or around a staircase landing. Modular sections can be carried vertically. For ground-floor bungalows with wide entries, the rigidity of a corner sofa can be a premium choice.

Size Planning for Indian Rooms

A standard L-shaped sofa for a 3BHK typically measures 270 cm × 180 cm. For a 2BHK living room of 14–16 feet wide, a 240 cm × 160 cm configuration is more appropriate and leaves adequate traffic clearance. Always designate which wall the longer section faces before ordering — this determines the entire room layout and cannot be changed after delivery without disassembly.
