What Is Standard Bespoke Furniture?

By Rohan Shah, SOISU Furniture · 28 May 2026

Direct Answer

Standard Bespoke is SOISU's term for a specific approach to furniture manufacturing: the structural engineering, material selection, and quality controls of a factory production process, but applied to custom dimensions and configurations that fit individual rooms precisely. It sits between off-the-shelf furniture (fixed dimensions, fast delivery, compromised fit) and full bespoke (unlimited customisation, 6–12 month lead times, atelier pricing). In Standard Bespoke, the core product — foam grade, frame construction, leather source — is standardised at a high quality level. What is customised is the dimensional specification: sofa width, seat depth, arm height, leg finish. This allows SOISU to build furniture that fits a 340 cm Worli sea-facing wall or a 210 cm Bandra studio apartment alcove without compromising the structural or material quality that full production-line economies of scale enable. The result is furniture that looks like it was made for the room — because it was — at a price point below full bespoke.

Why Standard Dimensions Often Fail Indian Rooms

European furniture standard dimensions (220 cm 3-seater, 90 cm seat depth) were developed for European room proportions, which tend towards taller ceilings, longer walls, and lower usage density. Indian premium apartments — particularly in Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore — have a different geometry: they are typically smaller in floor area, have proportionally shorter walls (a 320 cm living room wall is very common), and the sofa must navigate around structural columns, open kitchen islands, and balcony doorways. A standard 220 cm sofa against a 280 cm wall between a column and a door leaves awkward dead space on one side. Custom-dimensioned at 245 cm with an adjusted arm width, it reads as made for the space.

What Gets Customised, What Stays Fixed

In SOISU's Standard Bespoke model, the fixed elements are the quality-defining ones: Italian leather source (Foggia district, Puglia), foam specification (HR 35–40 kg/m³), frame construction (kiln-dried hardwood), and structural engineering (connectors, spring suspension). The customisable elements are dimensional: overall width (typically ±40 cm from standard), seat depth (±10 cm), back height (±8 cm), arm height and width, leg height and finish (natural, ebonised, lacquered). Fabric and leather colour selection is also within the customisation scope. What is not customised in Standard Bespoke: internal structural architecture (frame shape, spring layout, foam layer configuration) — these are pre-engineered for structural integrity and cannot be changed without re-engineering the product.
