Which Sofa Cushion Filling Is Best for Indian Homes?

By Rohan Shah, SOISU Furniture · 28 May 2026

Direct Answer

For Indian homes, a high-resilience (HR) foam core wrapped in a 50–70 gsm fibre layer is the most practical cushion filling. Pure feather/down cushions look luxurious but clump in Mumbai's humidity and require daily re-plumping — impractical for most Indian households. Pure polyester fibre flattens within 1–2 years under daily Indian family use. Pure foam without a fibre wrap feels rigid and shows body indentations quickly in heat above 35°C. The foam-fibre combination gives the initial softness of fibre with the structural recovery of HR foam, and the outer fibre layer can be replaced affordably without changing the inner foam core. SOISU uses this combination with a minimum foam density of 35 kg/m³.

Foam Core: The Non-Negotiable Foundation

Every durable sofa cushion in India should have an HR foam core rated at minimum 35 kg/m³. This is the structural layer that determines how long the cushion holds its shape. Foam cores below 28 kg/m³ compress permanently within 2–3 years of daily use, particularly in hot climate conditions where the foam cell walls soften. Do not accept bonded foam — it absorbs humidity unevenly and collapses from the inside.

Fibre Wrap: Softness Without Sacrifice

A dacron (polyester) fibre wrap of 50–70 gsm around the foam core gives a cushion a softer, more rounded appearance and feel without sacrificing structural support. The fibre is replaceable — a significant cost advantage. Without a fibre wrap, foam-only cushions feel like sitting on a firm block and require a separate scatter cushion for comfort, which is an indirect admission that the base product is not complete.

Why Feather Cushions Fail in India

Down and feather cushions are standard in European and American luxury sofas because their climate maintains consistent humidity. In Mumbai's monsoon season at 85% relative humidity, feathers absorb moisture, compress into clusters, and develop an odour within 2–3 months. Even in air-conditioned rooms, the transition between AC-on and AC-off creates humidity cycling that feather fill cannot handle gracefully. For India, feather is a premium aesthetic without practical durability.
